DigiTimes wrote:
Investors of Tyan Computer have approved a deal to merge with Mitac International, which proposed a takeover in March, according to a Tyan filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE). Mitac, which currently holds a stake in Tyan, will be the surviving company after the merger is closed.

One CPU Dies -- Planning a New Machine

Hey, it's been a while since I posted here. My dual opteron system is now a single-opteron system after a fan failure caused one of my processors to burn up. I pulled it out and rebooted OK. The good news is, the machine is quieter now. :-)

Actually the fan didn't fail, the control for it seemed to go nuts, it was starting and stopping every couple seconds. So I fear something on the motherboard is actually what failed. Thus I am not going to replace the processor, I will just build a new machine.

I almost bought a dual quad-core Xeon system, but I just cannot stand Intel's crappy memory system and the FB-DIMM memory. So my plan is to wait it out for the Barcelona chips. The tentative plan is:

Mitac Fully Acquires Tyan Computer.

Appears Mitac and Tyan are to merge.

Xbit Labs wrote:
After a partnership that lasted for about half of a decade, Mitac International Corp. announced plans to fully acquire Tyan Computer Corp., a maker of server and workstation products. While it is unclear what will happen to Tyan’s brand-name, it is known that Mitac and Tyan will become one company which will share all the resources.

Goodbye K8WE. No more big green meanie. No more dual opteron goodness.

As of noon tomorrow, I'll be minus my tower.
It grew from
2x Opteron 246 & a Chenbro SR106 w/ 550W PSU to 2x Opteron 254 & a Lian Li V2000B+ w/ 1000W PSU.

It went from being a dream come true to an artifact of a bygone era. I've spent more and more time on my laptops, and generally spend 99% of my time on my Thinkpad, using the tower solely as a file server.

I'm giving up 2x254s, 4gb of RAM, 1.3TB hdd space, a 7800GTX, X-Fi, etc. for what was supposed to be a compromise between the power of the tower and the mobility of my T43...a middle-end E1705. T2300e, 1gb RAM, 80gb hdd, 7800Go. Woefully underpowered in comparison, or so I thought. I ended up getting scores in games within 10% of my tower...and it used a fraction of the space, power, and produced practically no heat.

Ooops..

Sorry about that all, didn't realise that'd happened (just startd a new job haven't checked in in a while).

I've temporarily disabled the Gallery module to make the site useable again, not sure why its causing such an error.

Terminal Dogma's coming along well

Tyan K8WE S2895
2x Dual Core Opteron 270
320gb WD Sata 7200 HD
2gb Corsair ram
BFG 7900 GTX OC 512
Thermaltake Armor VA8003SWA
2x D.D. RBX, single 5.25 DD res, BIX2 rad

So far for a 1st build things are going alright. Now that I am hooking up the watercooling I am more nervous, but ready to fully OC the thing.

8/28/06
Well, with 3 leaks dealt with (while in the comp of course and all on waterblocks after 24 hour testing and 0 leaks...thank god I was using non conductive coolant) It is basicially finished. Just waiting for the floppy drive and more coolant so I don't have to tilt the tower.

XP setup BSOD (aspi.sys)

I have had my system for almost a year, it has been pretty stable....until now.

Today I replaced two seagate 7200.8 300Gb (no raid) drives with two 74 raptors (raid'ed).

After I did this I started getting BSOD's (aspi.sys) during the xp setup, after it reboots for first time. It appears to happen as it is configuring hardware. The only hardware I changed is the hard drives.

I did the xp pro setup with different cd; an original pro cd, as well as nlite'd cds. Same error. I also unRAIDed the drives and tried to install it on only one of the drives, again same exact error.

I do have two plextor sata drives, but they have never prevented me from setting up xp before. I am also running the latest bios 2895_103l.

What I Would Do Differently

I was just looking at MAXIMUM PC's annual Dream Machine. It started me thinking about what I would do differently if I could go back and build my machine again a year ago.

I am very happy with the K8WE and dual Opterons. These were a good choice then, and I still think they are the best choice for a DUAL processor machine today. Single processor -- I would use Conroes today, but Opteron memory bandwidth blows dual Intel processors out of the water. And nForce support for so many PCI-Express lanes makes it the only game in town. K8WE is a sweet board, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
